The House Margaret Built

Chapter 08 - The House Margaret Built
The Carter house was not grand.
But Margaret had made it beautiful.
She painted the kitchen cabinets herself.
She planted roses beside the porch.
Every Christmas, she hung lights around the same maple tree.
Robert wanted to sell all of it to cover the business debt.
Emma reviewed the numbers.
She worked in corporate finance and understood immediately that the house sale would not solve the real problem.
It would delay bankruptcy.
Nothing more.
“Cancel the sale,” she told him.
Robert shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand better than you think.”
She showed him a restructuring plan.
The company could close without forcing Robert to lose the house.
It would be painful.
Creditors would have to negotiate.
Assets would be sold.
Robert might have to take a salaried job for the first time in thirty years.
But he could survive.
Robert stared at the papers.
“I failed your mother.”
Emma’s voice softened.
“No. You made mistakes.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No, Dad. It isn’t.”
Robert looked at her.
For years he had believed failure was a permanent identity.
Emma was asking him to see it as an event.

That difference terrified him.
But for the first time, he listened.
