Two years after the accusation in the living room, the Carters gathered in the same house.
Emma was visiting from Seattle.
Ethan had completed his degree.
Robert had been promoted at work.
Rachel and her son had moved into a home of their own but still came for dinner every Sunday.
Caroline brought pie.
Before dessert, Robert stood.
Everyone looked nervous.
He laughed.
“Relax. Nobody pawned anything.”
The room erupted.
Then Robert became serious.
He apologized again.
Not only for the necklace.
For the years of silence.
For teaching his children that love meant hiding weakness.
Emma took his hand.
“You don’t have to apologize forever.”
Robert looked at her.
“I know.”
That was the difference.
He was no longer apologizing to escape guilt.
