Chapter 01 - My Father Packed His Bags—Then My Brother Found the Check He Hid in Mom’s Keepsake Box
## chapter 01 - The Suitcase by the Door
Claire Bennett knew something was wrong the moment she saw the black suitcase standing upright beside the living-room sofa.
Her father, Richard, had packed it so carefully that the zipper looked ready to burst. He stood beside it in his dark blue shirt, one hand gripping the handle, the other reaching for Claire as if he could soften what he was about to say simply by touching her.
“I’m leaving tonight.”
Claire stared at him.
Three months had passed since her mother, Ellen, died. Three months of casseroles from neighbors, unopened sympathy cards, and nights when Claire woke in her childhood bedroom because she thought she heard her mother calling from the kitchen.
And now her father was leaving too.
“Leaving for where?” she asked.
Richard looked toward the window.
“Florida. Maybe farther. I need a fresh start.”
Claire’s throat tightened. “You’re selling the house?”
His silence answered first.
Then he said, “The papers are already moving.”
Claire pulled her hands away.
“This was Mom’s house too.”
Richard’s face hardened. “Your mother is gone.”
The words landed like a slap.
Claire’s younger brother, Noah, stood frozen in the hallway. Behind him, Claire’s two children had stopped whispering.
Noah finally spoke.
“Dad, you said we had months.”
“I changed my mind.”
Richard reached for the suitcase.
Claire stepped in front of him.
“You don’t get to erase Mom because grieving is inconvenient.”
For one second, something flickered behind Richard’s anger.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“Move, Claire.”
She didn’t.

And that was when Noah remembered the small wooden box their mother had told him never to throw away.
The box Richard had been searching for all morning.
