The Truth About Ellen’s Final Day

Chapter 17 - The Truth About Ellen’s Final Day

Months later, Claire met with Ellen’s former attorney to close the estate.

Before she left, the attorney handed her a sealed audio recorder.

“Your mother made this the day before she entered hospice.”

Claire listened alone.

Ellen’s voice was weak but clear.

She spoke about Richard.

About Claire.

About Noah.

She said she knew her husband had failed them.

But she also believed shame had trapped him more deeply than greed.

Then Ellen said something Claire never expected.

“Claire, do not stay angry for me. Be angry for yourself if you need to. Set boundaries for yourself. Walk away if you must. But do not make revenge your inheritance.”

Claire cried for an hour.

That night, she called Richard.

She did not tell him she forgave him.

She said something harder.

“Mom left a message.”

Richard went silent.

“She said you could still become better.”

Richard began to cry.

Claire closed her eyes.

“So prove her right.”
