Richard Comes Back Without the Suitcase

Chapter 12 - Richard Comes Back Without the Suitcase
Richard returned one week later.
No suitcase.
No demands.
He stood on the porch holding a folder.
Claire did not invite him inside.
He handed her the folder.
Inside was a signed statement surrendering any claim to Ellen’s insurance money.
Another document transferred his remaining interest in the house trust to Claire and Noah after his death.
The last page was a confession prepared with his attorney.
He had admitted hiding the check.
He had admitted attempting to pressure his children into approving the sale.
He had also agreed to cooperate fully with investigators.
Claire looked at him.
“Why?”
Richard swallowed.
“Because your mother was right.”
“About what?”
“I kept trying to save myself from consequences. And every time I did, I became someone worse.”
Claire’s anger did not disappear.
But for the first time, she believed he understood what he had done.
Richard looked past her toward the living room.
“Can I see the kids?”
Claire hesitated.
“Not today.”
Pain crossed his face.
But he nodded.

“Okay.”
And for once, he did not argue.
