One Year After the Suitcase

Chapter 18 - One Year After the Suitcase
One year after the day Richard tried to leave, the black suitcase was still in his small rented apartment.
Empty.
He had never used the ticket to Florida.
He attended financial counseling.
Completed community service.
Spoke at a support group for fraud victims about how secrecy made people easier to manipulate.
He never mentioned Claire’s name.
Never presented himself as a hero.
He simply told the truth.
At home, Ellen’s Room welcomed its third family.
Claire had returned to work full-time.
Noah had started his own repair business and donated one weekend each month to maintain the apartment.
The Bennett family was smaller than it had once felt.
But it was more honest.
One Sunday, Richard came for dinner.
He stood at the doorway and waited.
Claire smiled faintly.
“You can come in.”
May you like
He looked at her as if the words meant more than they did.
Maybe they did.
