Melissa’s Real Name

Chapter 11 - Melissa’s Real Name
Three days later, police discovered that “Melissa Crane” was not Melissa Crane.
Her real name was Dana Mercer.
She had used at least four aliases over ten years.
Her pattern was always similar.
She approached financially distressed married men.
She gained access to their accounts.
She isolated them from their families.
Then she disappeared with whatever remained.
Richard was not her only victim.
But he was the only one whose wife had uncovered the scheme before her death.
Ellen had quietly copied documents and sent them to an attorney.
She had not reported everything immediately because Richard was still listed on several questionable transactions.
She had hoped he would confess first.
He never did.
Claire received a call from the detective.
“Your mother may have given us the evidence we need.”
Claire sat alone in the kitchen after the call.
For months she had thought Ellen died frightened and powerless.
Now she understood the truth.
Her mother had been fighting until the end.
Not for money.
For them.
That evening, Claire opened the last drawer of Ellen’s desk.
Inside was a photograph of Richard and Ellen on their wedding day.
On the back, Ellen had written:
People can fail you and still be worth saving.
May you like
But saving someone is not the same as protecting them from consequences.
Claire read the sentence three times.
