The Signature That Wasn’t His

Chapter 08 - The Signature That Wasn’t His
The mortgage document was for $190,000.
Richard’s signature appeared at the bottom.
He stared at it.
“I never signed this.”
Claire wanted to hate him.
Part of her still did.
But the fear in his face was real.
Noah compared the signature with an old Christmas card.
“They don’t match.”
Richard grabbed his phone and called Melissa.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
He called Victor.
The number had been disconnected.
For the first time, Richard understood the full trap.
He had lied to his family.
He had betrayed his wife.
He had hidden Claire’s inheritance.
But while he was doing it, the two people he trusted outside his family had been preparing to strip him of everything.
Claire folded her arms.
“Call the police.”
Richard shook his head.
“If I do that, they’ll investigate me too.”
“They should.”
He stared at his daughter.
Those two words hurt more than anything else she had said.
Claire continued.
“You don’t get protection from consequences just because someone did something worse to you.”
Noah nodded.
Richard looked at the suitcase.
Then at Ellen’s letter.
Finally, he sat down.
May you like
“Okay.”
He called the police.
