The Woman at the Airport

Chapter 06 - The Woman at the Airport
Claire found the airline reservation in Richard’s coat pocket.
Two tickets.
Richard Bennett.
And Melissa Crane.
Claire had never heard the name.
Noah had.
His face went still.
“She called the house once.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Claire looked at him.
“Who is she?”
“A friend.”
Noah laughed bitterly.
“A friend with a one-way ticket?”
Richard stood.
“This conversation is over.”
Claire held up the reservation.
“No. It started three months too late.”
Richard finally admitted that Melissa was a financial consultant he had met through Victor.
She had helped him “restructure” the debt.
Then she became more than a consultant.
Claire felt sick.
“Before Mom died?”
Richard’s silence was enough.
Noah turned away.
Claire expected to scream.
Instead, she whispered, “Mom knew?”
Richard shook his head quickly.
“I don’t think so.”
But Noah returned to the wooden box.
There was one envelope left.
