Ellen’s Last Letter to Her Husband

Chapter 07 - Ellen’s Last Letter to Her Husband
Richard refused to open the envelope.
So Claire placed it in front of him.
“She wrote your name.”
“I don’t want it.”
“You owe her that much.”
Richard stared at the handwriting.
Finally, he opened the letter.
He read silently.
His face collapsed.
Noah had never seen his father cry.
Not when his own father died.
Not when Ellen received her diagnosis.
Not even at the funeral.
Now tears ran down Richard’s face.
Claire took the letter when he let it fall.
Richard,
I know about Melissa.
I also know you are not leaving me because you stopped loving me. You are leaving yourself because you cannot bear the man you became.
Claire covered her mouth.
Ellen had known everything.
The affair.
The debt.
The plan.
But the letter contained one more revelation.
Melissa was not helping Richard escape the debt.
She was helping Victor take everything Richard owned.
Ellen had found bank transfers.
Documents.
And a second mortgage Richard claimed he had never signed.
Richard looked up.
“What second mortgage?”
Noah froze.
Claire slowly unfolded the final page.

Victor and Melissa had not been Richard’s rescuers.
They had been stealing from him too.
