The Woman Who Came Back

Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Came Back
Dana Mercer was arrested at a bus station in Georgia.
She had cash, fake identification, and a list of account numbers belonging to other victims.
When Richard heard the news, he did not celebrate.
He looked sick.
Claire understood why.
Dana’s arrest did not erase the affair.
It did not erase the lies.
It only proved that Richard had been both betrayer and victim.
Victor agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence.
He admitted forging the second mortgage with Dana.
He also admitted that Richard’s original investment loss had been exaggerated to keep him desperate and compliant.
The true debt was far smaller than Richard believed.
Richard had nearly destroyed his family to pay a number built on fraud.
But he had still made his own choices.
The prosecutor offered him a deal for his cooperation.
No prison.
Restitution.
Community service.
Financial monitoring.
Claire expected Richard to be relieved.
Instead, he said, “I deserve worse.”

The prosecutor answered, “Maybe. But accountability isn’t about giving people the worst thing possible. It’s about making them face what they did.”
Claire never forgot that sentence.
