The investigation moved faster than anyone expected.
Victor Hale had already been flagged in two civil complaints.
Melissa Crane was not a licensed financial adviser.
The second mortgage appeared fraudulent.
But during the review, Claire learned something else.
Her father could not legally sell the family home alone.
Ellen had transferred her half of the property into a family trust six months before her death.
The beneficiaries were Claire and Noah.
Richard had life tenancy rights.
He could live there.
He could not sell it without their approval.
Claire stared at the attorney.
“So the sale Dad said was already happening…”
“Could not close legally.”
Noah leaned back in his chair.
Their mother had built protections everywhere.
Not because she hated Richard.
Because she no longer trusted the choices he was making.
The attorney handed Claire another document.
“And there is one more thing.”
Ellen had placed the $280,000 into a protected beneficiary account.
The cashier’s check was only one step in the transfer.
Richard had never been able to cash it himself.
He had hidden it because he believed that, with enough pressure, Claire would sign the money over.
