Richard returned home that evening.
The suitcase was still beside the sofa.
Claire placed the legal documents in front of him.
“You knew you couldn’t sell the house.”
Richard nodded.
“I thought you and Noah would sign.”
“Why would we?”
“Because I would have told you we had no choice.”
Claire felt something inside her break.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
The way trust often breaks.
“You were going to scare us.”
Richard looked ashamed.
“I was desperate.”
“You were going to use our grief.”
He had no answer.
Claire took the suitcase and rolled it toward him.
Richard looked surprised.
“You said I couldn’t leave.”
“That was before I knew everything.”
His face fell.
Claire opened the door.
“You need to go somewhere else tonight.”
Noah stared at her.
Richard whispered, “Claire.”
She shook her head.
“I love you because you’re my father. But I do not trust you enough to sleep under the same roof as my children.”
Richard picked up his suitcase.
This time, nobody stopped him.
But when he reached the sidewalk, his phone rang.
