Sophie’s Discovery

Chapter 10 - Sophie’s Discovery
Sophie had always believed her grandfather died ashamed of being poor.
The archive changed that.
She began searching through Thomas’s old tools and notebooks stored in Abigail’s garage.
Inside a rusted metal toolbox, she found a false bottom.
Beneath it lay a sealed copy of the settlement.
Thomas had possessed it all along.
Abigail read the agreement at the kitchen table.
Henry had forced Thomas to surrender voting control of his shares for twenty years, but ownership remained with Thomas and his heirs.
The company was required to pay annual distributions into trust.
At the end of twenty years, control would return automatically.
That date had passed seventeen years earlier.
The Monroe family legally owned thirty percent of Whitmore Holdings.
Nathan read the final page.
A witness had signed the agreement.
Victoria Whitmore.
She had been twenty-eight.
Abigail looked at him.
“Your mother knew.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
He had defended Victoria’s ignorance before the board.
Now he could not.
Sophie asked the question neither adult wanted to face.
“Why did Grandpa hide this too?”
The answer came in a note folded inside the agreement.
Thomas wrote that Henry threatened to expose Abigail’s mother for an old bookkeeping mistake if Thomas pursued the shares.
The mistake involved money borrowed from the bakery where she worked and returned two days later to pay for Abigail’s emergency surgery as a child.
No charges had ever been filed.
But Henry promised public humiliation.
Thomas chose silence.
Abigail pressed the note to her chest.
Her father had not surrendered because he was weak.
He had been protecting her mother.
Nathan spoke quietly.
“My family made fear into an inheritance.”
May you like
Abigail looked at him.
“Then stop inheriting it.”
