The Trial

Chapter 16 - The Trial

Harold Crane’s trial began that autumn.

The prosecution presented the trust records, forged board minutes, and evidence of payments used to silence former employees.

Victoria testified for three days.

Harold’s attorney tried to portray her as the mastermind.

She accepted responsibility for her part.

But she refused to carry his.

Nathan testified next.

Then Abigail.

The defense asked whether her marriage gave her a motive to manufacture the ownership claim.

Abigail looked toward the jury.

“My marriage almost ended because someone manufactured a document to erase the claim.”

The courtroom became silent.

Harold was convicted on all major counts.

He received a prison sentence.

Victoria avoided incarceration because of her cooperation, age, and lack of personal financial gain, but she received probation, major fines, and removal from every company role.

Outside court, reporters asked Abigail whether justice had been served.

She answered carefully.

“A verdict can punish a crime. It cannot return time.”

That evening, Victoria came to the bakery.

Customers recognized her.

No one greeted her.

She ordered an apple pie.

Abigail placed it on the counter.

Victoria handed her a fifty-dollar bill.

Abigail returned the change.

“No special treatment.”

Victoria nodded.

Before leaving, she said, “I am sorry.”

Abigail did not say she forgave her.

She said, “Do better tomorrow.”

Victoria returned the following week.

Then the week after.

Change arrived quietly, one ordinary visit at a time.
