The Last Letter from Thomas

Chapter 19 - The Last Letter from Thomas

While clearing the old garage, Abigail found one final letter from her father.

It had slipped behind a drawer in the metal toolbox.

The envelope was addressed simply:

For Abby, when the truth becomes useful.

She opened it at the bakery after closing.

Nathan and Sophie sat beside her.

Thomas wrote that he never wanted wealth to become Abigail’s measure of justice.

He had kept the settlement because he hoped one day she might use it.

But he also feared the Whitmores would consume her life if she pursued them.

If you find this, choose carefully, he wrote. Money can restore choices. It cannot restore years. Do not spend the rest of your life standing in a courtroom with dead men.

Abigail read the final paragraph aloud.

Build something they cannot erase. Put your name on it. Then leave room beside your name for people who earned the right to stand there.

Nathan reached for her hand.

The Monroe-Whitmore hotel.

The employee shares.

Sophie’s clinic.

Her father had imagined the shape of justice without knowing whether it would ever arrive.

Abigail folded the letter.

The next morning, she placed a copy inside the hotel exhibition.

The original remained in her kitchen drawer beside Nathan’s first wedding ring receipt and the partnership certificate.
