Victoria’s Choice

Chapter 11 - Victoria’s Choice

Nathan confronted his mother at the Whitmore estate.

Victoria stood beneath a portrait of Henry.

For the first time, Nathan noticed how much of the house existed to make dead men appear larger than the living.

He placed the settlement before her.

“You witnessed it.”

Victoria did not deny it.

“Your grandfather said the shares would never return to Thomas.”

“You knew that was illegal.”

“I knew Henry controlled the banks, the board, and the courts that mattered.”

“You became him.”

The accusation struck her.

Victoria sat down.

She admitted sending the marital agreement.

She admitted using Nathan’s signature page.

She also admitted keeping the Monroe trust hidden after Henry’s death.

“Why?” Nathan asked.

“Because the company was already struggling. Returning thirty percent could have forced a sale.”

“You chose hotels over people.”

“I chose the livelihoods of twelve thousand employees.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You chose the family name.”

Victoria looked toward Henry’s portrait.

Perhaps for the first time, she saw what Nathan saw.

Not a founder.

A man whose fear had been preserved as tradition.

Nathan told her the district attorney had requested an interview.

“If you lie again, I will testify against you.”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“You would send your mother to prison?”

“I would tell the truth.”

The words separated them more completely than anger could.

The next morning, Victoria entered the district attorney’s office.

She brought company records.

Board correspondence.

And a handwritten confession.

Harold Crane was arrested two days later for fraud, evidence suppression, and conspiracy involving the trust.

Victoria was not arrested immediately.

She agreed to cooperate.

Nathan did not call her.

Abigail did.

“Why are you speaking to me?” Victoria asked.

“Because telling the truth once does not repair thirty-seven years.”

May you like

“I know.”

“Then keep telling it.”
