Abigail’s Second Wedding

Chapter 17 - Abigail’s Second Wedding

Nathan wanted to renew their vows.

Abigail initially refused.

“We already had a wedding.”

“We had a ceremony followed by fraud, a family confession, and separate transportation.”

“That is memorable.”

He smiled.

“I want one memory that belongs only to us.”

They chose the bakery courtyard.

No luxury ballroom.

No society photographers.

Sophie hung warm lights between the brick walls.

Hotel employees brought flowers.

Raymond sat in the front row.

Victoria attended quietly and took a seat near the back.

Before the vows, Nathan brought out the silver champagne cart from the suite.

Guests became still.

On it rested two glasses and no papers.

Abigail laughed.

Nathan spoke first.

“The first night of our marriage, I asked Abigail not to leave because it would give someone else what they wanted.”

He looked at her.

“That was the wrong reason.”

Abigail’s eyes filled.

“The right reason is that every day since then, she has made me want to become honest enough to deserve staying.”

Abigail took his hands.

“My first husband taught me that love can end without anyone choosing it. Nathan taught me that love can survive only when people keep choosing truth.”

They exchanged the same rings.

When Nathan kissed her, Sophie cheered loudest.

The champagne remained untouched until Abigail lifted her glass.

“To reading before signing.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Victoria.
