The Daughter Who Chose Her Own Name

Chapter 18 - The Daughter Who Chose Her Own Name
Sophie graduated from law school three years later.
Her thesis examined hidden ownership structures and family-controlled corporations.
She received offers from large firms.
Instead, she founded a legal clinic inside the Monroe-Whitmore employee center.
The clinic helped workers recover unpaid wages, challenge medical debt, and understand contracts before signing them.
On the opening day, Sophie revealed the name:
The Thomas and Evelyn Monroe Justice Project.
Abigail cried.
Nathan pretended dust had entered his eye.
Victoria attended with no press.
After the ceremony, she gave Sophie a small box.
Inside was Henry Whitmore’s gold fountain pen.
“I thought you might want to sell it,” Victoria said.
Sophie examined the pen.
“No.”
Victoria looked disappointed.
Sophie smiled slightly.
“I’ll use it to sign documents he would have hated.”
Victoria laughed.
It was the first easy sound Abigail had ever heard from her.
Sophie had spent years deciding whether she wanted to carry Nathan’s surname after he became her stepfather.
At graduation, her name was announced:
Sophie Monroe Whitmore.
Abigail looked at her afterward.
“You added it.”
Sophie nodded.
“Not because his family gave us anything.”
She hugged Nathan.
“Because he did.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
