The Woman They Tried to Shame

Chapter 09 - The Woman They Tried to Shame
News vans parked outside Monroe Bakery.
Customers stopped coming.
Anonymous callers accused Abigail of trapping Nathan.
Someone painted GOLD DIGGER across the bakery door.
Sophie found it first.
Abigail stood on the sidewalk staring at the red letters.
Nathan arrived with a security team.
She refused them.
“I will not turn my bakery into a fortress.”
“This is no longer only gossip.”
“It was never only gossip.”
She picked up a bucket and began washing the paint away.
Nathan removed his coat, rolled up his sleeves, and helped.
Cameras recorded everything.
A reporter shouted, “Mr. Whitmore, did Mrs. Monroe marry you for access to the trust?”
Nathan stopped scrubbing.
He turned toward the cameras.
“She did not know the trust existed.”
“Then why did she leave your hotel hours after the wedding?”
Nathan looked at Abigail.
Because she had not returned his ring.
Because their marriage remained legally real but emotionally suspended.
He could have protected his pride.
Instead, he told the truth.
“She left because my family placed a fraudulent agreement beside our wedding champagne.”
The sidewalk fell silent.
Victoria watched the interview from her home.
Within an hour she called Nathan.
“You have exposed us to criminal investigation.”
“You exposed us when you forged my signature.”
“I did what I believed necessary.”
Nathan looked at the half-cleaned bakery door.
“That sentence has ruined enough lives.”
That evening, longtime bakery customers arrived with brushes and fresh paint.
One brought coffee.
Another brought flowers.
An elderly man placed twenty dollars on the counter without buying anything.
Abigail returned it.
“Come back tomorrow,” she said. “Buy a pie.”
The man smiled.
The next morning, the line stretched around the block.
