The Hotel Reopens

Chapter 15 - The Hotel Reopens

Renovating the original hotel took fourteen months.

Nathan worked beside architects, historians, and former employees.

Abigail insisted that the basement remain partly preserved.

Not as a haunted attraction.

As evidence.

A small exhibition told the story of Thomas Monroe, Charles Whitmore, the disabled fire system, and the decades-long cover-up.

At the entrance stood the photograph from the honeymoon suite.

MONROE & WHITMORE HOSPITALITY.

Sophie designed the exhibit.

On opening day, former workers filled the lobby.

Some brought old uniforms.

Others brought photographs.

An eighty-year-old dishwasher named Raymond approached Abigail.

“Your father carried me out of that basement.”

Abigail stared at him.

“He never told me.”

“He didn’t talk about what he did. He just showed up the next day to see whether I was alive.”

Raymond touched Thomas’s name on the wall.

“It took them long enough.”

Nathan watched Abigail cry without hiding it.

Later, they stood alone in the restored honeymoon suite.

A champagne cart waited near the sofa.

Abigail stopped in the doorway.

Nathan looked worried.

“I can have it removed.”

“No.”

She entered.

On the cart lay one folded sheet of paper.

Nathan immediately raised both hands.

“It is not a contract.”

Abigail opened it.

It was a new partnership certificate.

Monroe-Whitmore House.

Equal founders.

Beneath the names was a blank line.

Abigail looked at him.

“For what?”

“Your signature. Only if you read every word.”

May you like

She laughed.

Then she signed.
