Nothing Hidden Beneath the Champagne

Chapter 20 - Nothing Hidden Beneath the Champagne

Five years after the night everything broke open, Abigail and Nathan returned to the honeymoon suite on their anniversary.

The room had been redesigned, but the tall windows, velvet sofa, and silver service cart remained.

Rain softened the Boston skyline.

Abigail wore a cream silk robe.

Nathan wore a black shirt.

They laughed when they realized how closely they resembled the frightened couple they had once been.

A bottle of champagne waited on the cart.

Abigail lifted the ice bucket.

Nothing was hidden beneath it.

“No contract?” she asked.

Nathan checked dramatically.

“No forged signature. No suppressed ownership claim. No family confession.”

“Disappointing.”

He poured two glasses.

On the wall hung a framed copy of the original partnership photograph.

Thomas Monroe and Henry Whitmore stood beneath the old hotel sign, both names visible.

History had not been cleaned up.

It had been corrected.

Victoria now volunteered twice a week with the medical relief fund. She and Abigail would never have an easy relationship, but they had an honest one.

The company was profitable again.

Employees owned shares.

Sophie’s clinic had helped more than four hundred families.

The bakery had opened a second location inside the hotel lobby.

Nathan raised his glass.

“To the paper that nearly ended our marriage.”

Abigail touched her glass to his.

“To the truth it failed to bury.”

They sat together on the sofa.

No hidden clause waited between them.

No parent controlled the room.

No dead man’s fear shaped their next decision.

Abigail thought of the woman who had stood barefoot beside the champagne cart five years earlier, convinced that trusting Nathan might cost her dignity.

She wished she could tell that woman something.

Love was not proven by never being wounded.

It was proven by what two people built after refusing to hide the wound.

Nathan reached for her hand.

“Are you happy?”

Abigail looked toward the photograph, the city, and the man who had chosen truth even when truth dismantled everything he inherited.

“Yes,” she said.

Then she smiled.

“But I’m still reading anything you ask me to sign.”

Nathan laughed.

The champagne glasses caught the warm light.

And beneath the silver cart, there was nothing left to hide.
