The Boardroom

Chapter 08 - The Boardroom
The Whitmore board gathered the next morning.
Victoria sat at one end of the long table.
Nathan sat at the other, no longer as chief executive but as the largest known shareholder.
Abigail and Sophie entered with Martin.
Several directors looked offended by their presence.
Nathan placed Charles’s letter and the recording transcript on the table.
The room changed.
The board’s oldest member, Harold Crane, refused to read it.
“This material was obtained from private company archives.”
Abigail stared at him.
“My father’s stolen property was private too.”
Harold looked toward Victoria.
That glance told Nathan everything.
“You knew,” he said.
Harold’s hands tightened.
“I knew there had been a settlement.”
“Where is it?”
“No one has seen it in decades.”
Sophie opened a file.
“We found a reference to an escrow account.”
Harold went pale.
The account remained active.
For thirty-seven years, a percentage of Whitmore hotel profits had been deposited into a dormant trust under Thomas Monroe’s tax identification number.
The money had never been delivered.
Someone had kept the trust alive while hiding it from Abigail’s family.
Martin calculated the current value.
Twenty-eight million dollars.
Abigail felt no triumph.
She thought of her mother selling their house.
Of Thomas delaying medical care because he worried about cost.
Of every morning Abigail opened the bakery before dawn because debt had become part of the family language.
Victoria looked at her.
“I did not know the trust still existed.”
“But you knew enough to fear it,” Abigail said.
Harold finally spoke.
“Henry believed Thomas would eventually return.”
“He died waiting for an apology,” Abigail replied.
The board voted to begin an independent investigation.
Then Harold made his final move.
He claimed Nathan had conspired with Abigail to seize control of the company through marriage.
The accusation spread to the press within an hour.
By evening, Abigail was no longer a bride whose wedding night had been ruined.

She was a calculated widow accused of marrying a wealthy man to recover a hidden fortune.
And someone released photographs of Sophie entering the basement archive.
