Chapter 01 - The Night He Carried His Mother Out of the Mansion She Once Owned

## chapter 01 - Don’t Take Me Back Inside

The music was still playing when Ethan Cole carried his mother down the marble steps of Hawthorne Manor.

Behind him, the glass doors stood open to a ballroom filled with candles, champagne, and guests who had come to celebrate his father’s engagement. No one moved. No one seemed to understand what they had just witnessed.

Laura Cole clung to Ethan’s shoulders in a pale cream dress, her auburn hair loose around her face. She was conscious, but barely steady. Her eyes remained fixed on the people standing in the doorway.

Charles Cole, Ethan’s father, stood beneath the porch light with one hand braced against the doorframe.

Beside him was Vanessa Vale, the elegant blonde woman he planned to marry in six weeks.

Ethan’s younger sister, Grace, stood behind them in a silver dress, one hand pressed over her mouth.

“Put her down,” Charles ordered.

Ethan kept walking.

Laura tightened her arms around his neck and whispered, “Don’t take me back inside.”

Her voice was so quiet Ethan almost missed it.

He stopped at the bottom of the steps.

“Why?”

Laura looked past him toward the mansion she had not entered in seventeen years.

“Because they locked the east doors again.”

Ethan stared at her.

The east wing had been closed since he was a child. His father claimed the rooms had been damaged by flooding and never restored.

Laura’s breathing turned uneven.

Vanessa descended one step.

“She’s confused. Ethan, your mother is not well.”

Laura looked directly at her.

For the first time that evening, fear vanished from her face.

“No,” she said. “I finally remember what you did.”

The guests inside began whispering.

Charles stepped forward.

“Laura, stop.”

She reached into the folds of her dress and pulled out a small brass key.

Ethan recognized the engraved initials.

L.C.

His mother’s.

“I found this in the room where they kept me,” she said.

Ethan felt the night change around him.

For seventeen years, he had believed his mother left without saying goodbye.

Now she was in his arms, terrified of the house his father still called home.

And the key in her hand opened a door no one in the Cole family wanted him to see.
