The Trial of Hawthorne Manor

Chapter 13 - The Trial of Hawthorne Manor
Charles accepted a plea agreement before trial.
He admitted to fraudulent property transfers, interference with Laura’s correspondence, and knowingly submitting false guardianship reports.
Dr. Reed lost his medical license and received a prison sentence for falsifying evaluations in exchange for foundation money.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to evidence suppression and forgery. She received a reduced sentence after providing records proving Charles directed the scheme.
The judge asked Laura whether she wished to speak.
She stood at the lectern.
“My illness was real,” she said. “That fact was used to make every other truth I spoke sound unreal.”
The courtroom remained silent.
“I needed treatment. I did not need my children taken from my life. I needed rest. I did not need my name removed from my home. I needed help. I did not need ownership.”
Ethan looked down.
Grace reached for his hand.
Laura finished.
“When people hear this story, I do not want them to learn that mental illness makes someone weak. I want them to learn that illness must never become permission for others to erase a person.”
Charles received a sentence that included incarceration, restitution, and permanent removal from the company.
As officers led him away, he looked toward Ethan and Grace.
Neither turned away.
Neither moved toward him.
The truth had finally reached the public record.
But Laura still had one decision left.
Hawthorne Manor was legally hers again.
