The Safe Behind the Portrait

Chapter 04 - The Safe Behind the Portrait

Ethan returned to Hawthorne Manor at ten that morning.

Charles was waiting in the library.

Vanessa stood beside the fireplace in a white blouse, composed as ever.

“You embarrassed this family in front of two hundred people,” Charles said.

Ethan closed the door.

“You kept Mom under financial control for seventeen years.”

Charles did not deny the payments.

“She required care.”

“She was living in a supervised apartment because your reports said she could not contact her children.”

“Laura was unstable.”

“So you lied to us?”

“I protected you.”

Ethan had heard wealthy men use that word to cover every form of control.

Vanessa spoke softly.

“Your mother’s memories are unreliable.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Did you follow her into the east wing last night?”

“I was trying to help.”

“Did you touch her?”

“No.”

“Did you take the key?”

Vanessa’s expression shifted for less than a second.

That was enough.

Ethan walked toward the east corridor.

Charles blocked him.

“Those rooms are private.”

Ethan laughed without humor.

“I grew up here.”

“The property belongs to me.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“No, it doesn’t.”

Grace entered carrying a leather folder.

She had spent the morning searching county records.

Hawthorne Manor had never been solely Charles’s property.

Laura inherited it from her grandmother before the marriage.

During her treatment, a transfer deed placed the estate into a Cole family trust.

Laura’s signature appeared on the final page.

Laura had no memory of signing it.

Grace held up the document.

“The notary was Vanessa Vale.”

Vanessa went pale.

Ethan stepped around his father.

The east wing smelled of dust and old cedar.

They found Laura’s dressing room at the end of the corridor. A blue portrait still hung on the far wall.

Behind it was a steel safe.

The brass key fit.

Inside were photographs, medical records, a tape recorder, and an envelope addressed to Ethan and Grace.

The date on it was seventeen years earlier.

Ethan opened the letter.

My children, if Charles tells you I abandoned you, do not believe him.
