Grace Begins Again

Chapter 16 - Grace Begins Again
Grace spent a year building the Hawthorne Center.
She stopped attending society events.
She cut her hair shorter.
She learned how to read nonprofit budgets and how to sit quietly with people who did not want advice.
One afternoon, an electrician named Marcus Reed arrived to repair the old east wing wiring.
He was patient, funny, and completely unimpressed by the Cole name.
Grace liked him immediately.
That frightened her.
She told Laura.
“What if I choose someone like Dad?”
Laura smiled gently.
“Then watch what he does when you say no.”
Grace began noticing.
When she changed dinner plans, Marcus adjusted.
When she asked for time alone, he gave it.
When they disagreed about the renovation schedule, he did not call her emotional.
Months later, Andrew appeared at the center.
He wanted another chance.
“My parents were wrong,” he said.
Grace looked at him.
“And you?”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
He smiled hopefully.
Grace continued.
“But fear explained your choice. It did not make the choice acceptable.”
She wished him well.
Then she returned inside, where Marcus was labeling electrical panels in handwriting no one could read.
He looked up.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
He nodded and went back to work.
No demand for details.
No suspicion.

Grace smiled.
Sometimes love announced itself not through intensity, but through the absence of fear.
