Grace’s Broken Engagement

Chapter 10 - Grace’s Broken Engagement
The scandal reached Grace’s life next.
Her fiancé, Andrew Mercer, came from a politically connected family.
His parents urged him to postpone the wedding until the Cole investigation ended.
Andrew agreed without asking Grace.
She removed her ring at dinner.
“You’re ending this over a delay?” he asked.
“No. I’m ending it because when your parents became uncomfortable, you decided my life needed their permission.”
Andrew insisted he loved her.
Grace looked toward her mother, who sat quietly at the far end of the table.
“I grew up watching love used as an excuse for control.”
She placed the ring beside his plate.
“I will not marry it.”
Laura took Grace home.
For years, Grace had blamed her mother’s absence for every important day Laura missed.
Now she understood that anger had been planted and watered by other people.
That did not erase the pain.
It gave the pain a true address.
At Laura’s house, Grace cried on the kitchen floor.
Laura sat beside her.
“I should have fought harder,” Laura said.
Grace shook her head.
“You were fighting people who wrote the rules.”
“I still stopped.”
“You survived.”
Laura looked at her daughter.
Grace rested her head on her mother’s shoulder.
It was the first time they had sat that close since Grace was four.
