Chapter 07 - The Father Who Took the Stand
The courtroom was closed to the public.
Charles testified first.
He described Laura’s breakdown in careful, sympathetic language. He spoke about nights she cried, meals she forgot, and one afternoon when she left the front door open during winter.
He never raised his voice.
He sounded like a devoted husband forced into impossible decisions.
Then Laura’s attorney asked about the estate transfer.
Charles admitted Hawthorne Manor funded Cole Development.
“Did Laura consent?”
“She signed the documents.”
“While under involuntary treatment?”
“She had periods of clarity.”
“Did you tell your children she left the country voluntarily?”
Charles looked toward Ethan.
“Yes.”
“Was that true?”
“No.”
Grace began crying silently.
The attorney played Laura’s recording.
Charles closed his eyes.
Then Ethan testified.
He spoke about the returned letters, the false story, and the seventeen years he spent believing his mother chose another life.
When asked whether Laura should control the estate immediately, Ethan answered carefully.
“She should receive support while she recovers.”
Charles’s attorney smiled.
“So you agree she is not capable.”
“No.”
Ethan looked at the judge.
“I agree that people recovering from harm deserve help they choose. That is different from control imposed by the person who harmed them.”
Laura testified last.
Her hands shook.
She forgot the year of Grace’s graduation.
Charles’s attorney used every hesitation.
Then he asked, “Mrs. Cole, do you believe your former husband conspired against you?”
Laura looked at Charles.
“I believe he loved power more than he loved me.”
The courtroom became still.
The judge denied Charles’s request for full guardianship.
A temporary independent fiduciary would oversee the estate while Laura’s capacity was evaluated fairly.
Charles lost control.
Outside court, reporters waited.
