Grace’s Secret
Chapter 03 - Grace’s Secret
Grace arrived at the clinic just before dawn.
She had changed out of her silver dress and wore jeans beneath an oversized coat. Her eyes were swollen from crying.
Ethan met her in the hallway.
“You knew Mom was alive.”
Grace nodded.
“For how long?”
“Seven months.”
He stepped back as if she had struck him.
“Seven months?”
“I found her name in Dad’s financial files.”
Grace explained that she had been helping Charles prepare the family foundation for an audit. A recurring payment appeared under a shell company called Eastbridge Care.
The payments had continued for seventeen years.
Grace traced the account to a supervised apartment program in Vermont.
Laura was living there.
“She wasn’t hidden in a locked hospital anymore,” Grace said. “But every report described her as unable to manage money, travel, or contact family without approval.”
“Whose approval?”
“Dad’s.”
Ethan’s anger became cold.
Grace visited Laura in secret.
At first, their mother barely believed she was real.
Then memories returned.
The east wing.
The night Charles threatened to take the children.
Vanessa signing forms beside a doctor.
A safe hidden behind the blue portrait in Laura’s old dressing room.
Grace brought Laura to the engagement party because Laura insisted the safe contained proof.
“She said she could end the marriage before it began,” Grace said.
Ethan looked toward Laura’s room.
“What’s in the safe?”
“She doesn’t know exactly. She remembers putting documents there before she entered treatment.”
“Then why did she collapse?”
Grace’s face tightened.
“She went into the east wing alone. Vanessa followed her.”
Ethan stared at his sister.
“What happened between them?”
“I don’t know. By the time I found Mom, she was on the floor and Vanessa was holding the key.”
Laura had taken it back.
Then Ethan arrived and carried her out.
Grace gripped his sleeve.
“Dad is going to say she’s confused.”
“Is she?”
“She forgets dates. She gets overwhelmed. But she remembers people.”
May you like
Grace’s voice broke.
“And she remembered that Vanessa was in the room the night they took her away.”
