The Apology Without Forgiveness

Chapter 12 - The Apology Without Forgiveness

Charles stood beneath the porch light where Laura could close the door whenever she chose.

He looked smaller without the mansion behind him.

“I loved you,” he said.

Laura’s expression did not change.

“You loved the version of me that agreed.”

“I was afraid you would take the children.”

“You took them first.”

Charles looked down.

“I believed treatment would help.”

“For thirty days.”

“I didn’t know how to undo what came after.”

“You signed every extension.”

His voice broke.

“By then Ethan hated you. Grace barely remembered you. If you came back, they would know I lied.”

“So you kept lying to protect yourself.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised both of them.

Charles apologized.

Not elegantly.

Not completely.

But without blaming illness, business, or Vanessa.

Laura listened.

Then she said, “I believe you regret being caught by the consequences.”

He flinched.

“Can you forgive me?”

“No.”

The word was calm.

Charles closed his eyes.

Laura continued.

“Forgiveness is not the next task you assign me.”

She stepped back toward the door.

“You will tell the truth in court. You will return what you took. You will stop using our children to reach me.”

Charles nodded.

“Will I ever see you again?”

Laura looked at the man she once planned to grow old beside.

“Perhaps one day when looking at you no longer feels like being asked to disappear.”

She closed the door.

Her hands shook afterward.

Ethan offered his arm.

Laura steadied herself without taking it.

“I’m all right.”

And for the first time, she believed the words.
