The Diagnosis Money Bought

Chapter 06 - The Diagnosis Money Bought

Dr. Miriam Ross reviewed Laura’s old medical files.

The diagnosis changed six times in seven years.

The medications changed fourteen times.

Several evaluations described Laura as “fixated on financial persecution” because she repeatedly claimed Charles stole her property.

The records now proved those claims were true.

Miriam called Ethan and Grace into her office.

“Your mother did experience a serious postpartum mental health crisis,” she said. “That part should not be minimized.”

Ethan nodded.

“But?”

“But illness does not erase legal rights. It does not justify isolation from family for seventeen years.”

She showed them documents extending Laura’s guardianship.

Charles signed the requests.

Vanessa submitted progress notes describing Laura as delusional whenever she asked to contact Ethan and Grace.

One physician, Dr. Malcolm Reed, approved every extension.

Ethan recognized the name.

Reed served on the Cole Foundation board.

“He was paid by my father.”

Miriam did not answer directly.

“The pattern requires investigation.”

Laura sat in the next room, unaware of the full conversation.

Grace pressed her hands together.

“Can she live alone?”

“Eventually, perhaps. Recovery is not a courtroom switch. She needs stability, choices, and time.”

Ethan looked through the glass at his mother.

For years he had imagined confronting the woman who abandoned him.

Now he wanted to protect her.

But Laura did not want another protector deciding her life.

When Ethan offered to move her into his apartment, she shook her head.

“I want a door I can lock from the inside.”

The sentence stayed with him.

They found a small furnished house near Grace’s neighborhood.

Laura chose the curtains herself.

She chose her doctor.

She chose when visitors could come.

Every choice seemed ordinary.

To Laura, each one was proof that her life belonged to her again.

Then a legal notice arrived.

Charles had petitioned the court to restore full guardianship, claiming Laura posed a danger to herself and the family estate.

The hearing was scheduled for Monday.
