The Letter She Wrote Before Disappearing

Chapter 05 - The Letter She Wrote Before Disappearing

Laura’s letter was six pages long.

She wrote it the night before entering treatment.

She admitted she was struggling after Grace’s birth. She described panic attacks, sleeplessness, and moments when ordinary sounds made her feel trapped inside her own body.

But she also wrote that she wanted help.

Not disappearance.

Charles promised thirty days at a private clinic.

Laura accepted because she trusted him.

Then she described another fear.

Charles had begun moving money from the Hawthorne estate into Cole Development, the company he ran with his brother.

When Laura objected, he accused her of being too emotional to understand business.

She copied account numbers and placed the records in the safe.

If Charles tells you I left willingly, the letter said, ask why he needed my signature after I was gone.

Ethan stopped reading.

Grace took the pages.

At the bottom, Laura wrote:

Ethan, take care of your sister. Grace, do not let anyone tell you kindness is the same as weakness. I will be home before the leaves change.

She never came home.

The safe also contained an audio cassette.

Ethan found an old player in the library.

Laura’s voice emerged through static.

She was arguing with Charles.

“You cannot use the house as collateral.”

“I already did.”

“It belongs to the Hawthorne trust.”

“You are not well enough to make these decisions.”

“I am well enough to know theft.”

Then Vanessa’s younger voice entered.

“Laura, the car is ready.”

The recording ended.

Charles stood in the doorway listening.

He looked older than Ethan had ever seen him.

“You recorded us,” he said.

Laura’s letter trembled in Grace’s hand.

“You lied to us for seventeen years.”

Charles looked at his children.

“I was trying to keep the company alive.”

May you like

Ethan stared at him.

“So Mom was collateral too.”
