The Company Charles Built with Her House

Chapter 11 - The Company Charles Built with Her House

The forensic audit revealed that Hawthorne Manor had secured the first major loan for Cole Development.

Laura’s inherited property made Charles’s empire possible.

Later loans used the estate again without proper authorization.

If Laura reclaimed every asset tied to the illegal transfers, the company could collapse.

Twelve hundred employees faced uncertainty.

Charles used that fear publicly.

“If Laura continues,” he told reporters, “ordinary families will lose their jobs.”

Ethan was furious.

Laura was not.

“He has always placed people between himself and consequences.”

She proposed a settlement.

The company would acknowledge the fraudulent transfers.

Laura would receive thirty-five percent ownership and the right to appoint independent board members.

Employee pensions would be protected.

Charles would surrender voting control.

Her attorney warned she could demand more.

Laura shook her head.

“I want justice. I do not want strangers punished for working in a company my house built.”

The board accepted.

Charles refused.

He filed a counterclaim arguing the original Hawthorne trust barred Laura from managing business assets due to “mental incapacity.”

The clause had been added during her treatment.

The witness signature belonged to Vanessa.

The notary was Dr. Reed.

Investigators now had enough.

Charles was charged with fraud, unlawful financial control, and conspiracy.

He was released pending trial.

That evening he arrived at Laura’s house.

Ethan stepped outside before he reached the porch.

“You cannot be here.”

Charles looked toward the window.

“I need to speak to her.”

“No.”

Laura opened the door behind Ethan.

For seventeen years, other people had answered for her.

Not anymore.

“I’ll speak to him,” she said.

Then she looked at Charles.

“But you will stand outside.”
