The wedding at Whitmore House was supposed to be flawless.
White roses lined the terrace. A string quartet played beneath the old maple trees. Guests in tailored suits and summer dresses lifted champagne glasses while Emily Whitmore, still in her wedding gown, posed for photographs near the front steps.
Then Vanessa Cole picked up the garden hose.
The woman kneeling on the lawn looked nearly seventy. Her black lace dress was soaked through, gray hair plastered against her cheeks. She clutched a small leather purse to her chest while Vanessa, elegant in a champagne-colored dress, aimed the stream directly at her.
“You were told to leave,” Vanessa said coldly. “You don’t get to wander into a private wedding and embarrass this family.”
A few guests looked away.
Others watched.
No one stepped forward.
The older woman raised one trembling hand. “Please. I only need five minutes with Richard.”
Vanessa laughed.
“People like you always have a story.”
The front door opened.
Richard Whitmore, the sixty-six-year-old owner of the estate, stepped outside in his tuxedo. His expression changed the instant he saw the woman on the grass.
The color drained from his face.
“Turn that hose off,” he said.
Vanessa froze.
Richard came down the steps slowly.
The old woman looked up at him with tears mixing with the water on her face.
“Hello, Richard.”
His lips parted.
“Ruth?”
The entire lawn went silent.
