The House Ruth Lost

Chapter 08 - The House Ruth Lost
Ruth returned to a small rented bungalow two towns away.
Daniel and Emily came the next morning.
They expected anger.
Instead, they found her baking biscuits.
Ruth told them what had happened after she was accused.
She had been unable to find steady work. She sold the little house her husband had left her. Her daughter stopped speaking to her after classmates began repeating stories about “the thief.”
Years passed.
By the time the truth could have mattered, Ruth believed no one cared.
Then, six months earlier, Margaret Whitmore’s former attorney died.
His daughter found a locked metal box.
Inside were copies of the statement, bank records, photographs, and a handwritten note.
The note was addressed to Ruth.
Margaret had written only one sentence.
I am sorry I asked you to carry a shame that belonged to us.
Emily cried.
Daniel looked out the window.
Ruth folded the note again.
“I didn’t come back for revenge.”
“Then why did you come?” Emily asked.
May you like
Ruth met her eyes.
“Because I saw your mother building the same kind of lie around you.”
