Chapter 10 - Richard’s Confession
Richard held a press conference at the Whitmore Foundation headquarters.
He stood at the same podium where he had announced scholarships and hospital donations for twenty years.
This time, he spoke without prepared remarks.
“Ruth Bennett was falsely accused of stealing from my family,” he said. “I knew evidence existed that could clear her. I destroyed that evidence to protect myself.”
The room erupted.
Richard did not stop.
He admitted the foundation had failed Ruth.
He admitted his mother had participated in the cover-up.
He admitted Vanessa’s mother had taken the original money.
And he admitted that his own cowardice had allowed the lie to become permanent.
Ruth watched from home.
When it ended, her phone rang.
It was her daughter, Caroline.
They had not spoken in eleven years.
Ruth answered.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Caroline whispered, “Mom, I saw the news.”
Ruth closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry I believed them.”
The apology Ruth had waited decades to hear arrived on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.
