Chapter 17 - A Second Wedding
Emily and Daniel discovered something uncomfortable.
Their wedding day had become a symbol of everything they did not want their marriage to be.
Status.
Performance.
Family pressure.
So they made a decision.
Three months later, they held another ceremony.
This one took place in Ruth’s backyard.
There were thirty guests.
No photographers.
No string quartet.
No champagne tower.
Emily wore a simple white dress.
Daniel wore the same suit but no expensive watch.
Caroline stood beside Ruth.
Richard sat in the last row.
Vanessa was not allowed to attend while her case was pending, but she sent Emily a handwritten letter.
Emily read it privately.
Then she folded it and placed it in her pocket.
When the ceremony ended, Ruth handed Emily Margaret’s old leather purse.
“I think it has carried enough secrets,” she said.
Emily smiled.
