Patricia’s Truth

Chapter 14 - Patricia’s Truth
Ruth traveled to Vermont with Emily.
Patricia was eighty-nine.
Her voice was weak, but her memory was clear.
She apologized to Ruth.
Then she revealed the final secret.
Margaret Whitmore had planned to clear Ruth publicly.
The day before she died, she prepared a new statement and asked Richard to deliver it.
Richard had always claimed he found the document after the funeral.
That was a lie.
He received it while Margaret was still alive.
Ruth felt the old wound open again.
Richard had not made a frightened decision after losing his mother.
He had looked his dying mother in the eye and promised to tell the truth.
Then he chose not to.
Emily whispered, “Ruth…”
Ruth stood.
“I need to go home.”
Outside the facility, Emily asked whether she would expose Richard again.
Ruth looked toward the mountains.
“I don’t know.”
For thirty years, she had believed truth would set her free.

Now she understood something harder.
Truth could also demand that she decide what kind of person she wanted to become after receiving it.
