The House on Maple Street

Chapter 19 - The House on Maple Street
The new legal assistance fund opened its first office in a renovated house on Maple Street.
Ruth refused to let it bear her name.
Instead, the sign read:
THE OPEN DOOR PROJECT
On opening day, a hotel housekeeper arrived with two children and a folder of termination papers.
She had been accused of stealing jewelry from a guest.
She insisted she was innocent.
Ruth sat beside her.
For a moment, she saw herself kneeling on the Whitmore lawn, soaked and humiliated while strangers watched.
Then she looked at the woman beside her.
“You don’t have to prove yourself alone,” Ruth said.
Across the room, Richard quietly stacked chairs.
He had volunteered.
Ruth noticed him.
He did not ask whether she had forgiven him.
She appreciated that.
