Vanessa did not disappear quietly.
Within forty-eight hours, a story appeared online accusing Ruth of attempting to extort the Whitmore family.
Old newspaper clippings about the missing foundation money resurfaced.
A photograph of Ruth kneeling on the wedding lawn spread across social media.
The caption called her an unstable former employee.
For several hours, the lie worked.
Then someone released the full wedding video.
It showed Vanessa turning the hose on Ruth while the older woman repeatedly asked to speak with Richard.
Public sympathy changed overnight.
But Ruth hated the attention.
She did not want to become famous for being humiliated.
Richard offered her money.
She refused.
Daniel offered her a house.
She refused that too.
Finally Emily asked, “What would make this right?”
Ruth answered after a long silence.
“Clear my name publicly.”
Richard knew what that meant.
He would have to confess what he had done.
