The Name No One Mentioned

Chapter 02 - The Name No One Mentioned
Richard ordered the music stopped.
Vanessa lowered the hose, but she did not apologize.
Emily, the bride, hurried across the lawn with her new husband, Daniel Whitmore, only a few steps behind her.
“Dad, who is she?” Daniel asked.
Richard stared at Ruth as though thirty years had collapsed between them.
“She was your grandmother’s closest friend,” he said.
Ruth gave a bitter smile.
“That’s the version you told them?”
Richard flinched.
Vanessa stepped between them. “This is absurd. Security should remove her.”
Ruth held up the envelope.
“My name is Ruth Bennett. I worked in this house for nineteen years. I raised Richard’s children when their mother was sick. And I was blamed for stealing fifty thousand dollars that I never touched.”
Daniel looked at his father.
Richard said nothing.
Ruth continued.
“The money was taken from the family foundation. Everyone was told I confessed. I didn’t.”
Emily’s smile disappeared.
Vanessa’s voice sharpened. “What does any of that have to do with my daughter’s wedding?”
Ruth turned toward her.
“Everything.”
She opened the envelope and removed several pages protected inside a plastic sleeve.
At the top of the first page was the name of the Whitmore Family Foundation.
Below it was another name.
Vanessa Cole.
And beside it, a date from twenty-eight years earlier.
Vanessa stopped breathing for a second.

Ruth noticed.
So did Emily.
