Chapter 15 - The Last Lie Richard Told
Richard did not deny Patricia’s story.
When Ruth confronted him, he admitted everything.
His mother had given him the statement before she died.
He promised to deliver it to police.
Instead, he locked it in his desk.
Months later, he burned it.
“Why?” Ruth asked.
Richard cried.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
He simply sat down and covered his face.
“Because I was weak.”
Ruth stared at him.
“You were powerful.”
“That’s worse.”
He was right.
Richard resigned as chairman of the foundation the next morning.
He placed his voting shares into an independent trust until the investigation ended.
He also issued a second public statement correcting his earlier timeline.
His attorneys begged him not to.
He did it anyway.
Ruth did not forgive him that day.
