Richard admitted the truth before Ruth could accuse him.
He had found Margaret’s original statement after her funeral.
He burned it.
Daniel stared at his father in disbelief.
“You let an innocent woman live with that?”
Richard’s voice broke.
“I was thirty-eight. My company was collapsing. The scandal would have destroyed us.”
Ruth answered quietly.
“So you destroyed me instead.”
No one spoke.
Richard told them Ruth had lost her job, her apartment, and nearly every friend she had. The accusation followed her for years.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“This is ancient history.”
Ruth looked at her.
“No. Ancient history doesn’t send monthly checks.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Ruth produced a second folder.
For more than twenty years, someone had been moving small amounts from the Whitmore Foundation into shell charities.
The transfers had recently increased.
The latest payment had been made three days earlier.
To a company controlled by Vanessa.
Emily stepped backward.
“Mom?”
Vanessa shook her head. “You don’t understand.”
Ruth answered.
“That’s why I came.”
She turned to Emily.
“The wedding isn’t the lie.”
