Gregory surrendered to police two days later.
He admitted helping Evan falsify records.
He claimed Evan threatened to expose Gregory’s gambling debts and ruin his family.
Claire listened through the interview-room glass.
Gregory had eaten Thanksgiving dinner at her table.
His daughter had interned at one of Claire’s hotels.
He had accepted every kindness while helping remove her from her own company.
Detective Grant asked whether Evan ordered the fire.
Gregory hesitated.
Then he said the fire was not meant to spread.
Evan only wanted to destroy the original ownership agreements.
Gregory had cut power to the camera system.
He believed the filing room would be empty.
Claire felt sick.
The room shared a wall with Rosa’s bedroom.
If the fire had spread at night, Rosa could have died.
Gregory agreed to testify.
Evan was arrested that afternoon.
As officers placed him in the police car, he looked at Claire.
