Madison returned the next morning.
She wore jeans, no makeup, and the expression of someone who had not slept.
Claire nearly closed the door.
Madison held out a phone.
“You need to see this.”
The messages began six months earlier.
Evan had promised Madison a wedding, a house, and a senior role in the company.
He also told her Claire had agreed to a private divorce settlement.
One message mentioned the Paris trip.
Once she signs the French partnership, her shares become easier to move.
Claire read it twice.
Madison said she had not understood what he meant.
She believed Claire was voluntarily leaving the business.
“Why help me now?” Claire asked.
Madison looked toward the pool.
“Because yesterday I realized he didn’t choose me.”
Her voice broke.
“He chose whatever he thought I could help him steal.”
Madison had one more piece of information.
Evan had been meeting Gregory at a storage facility outside the city.
