The Fire in the Filing Room

Chapter 06 - The Fire in the Filing Room
Claire refused to leave.
Rebecca insisted they move the original papers to a safe location.
As they carried the box through the garage, smoke began pouring from the small filing room beside the office.
Rosa called emergency services.
The fire was contained quickly, but dozens of records were damaged.
The investigator found evidence that someone had tampered with an electrical outlet.
Evan arrived while firefighters were still outside.
He acted shocked.
Claire watched him carefully.
“You came quickly.”
He said Rosa had called him.
Rosa shook her head.
“I did not.”
For the first time, Evan looked frightened.
He accused Claire of setting the fire to frame him.
Rebecca stepped between them.
“That is enough.”
Police questioned everyone.
No arrest was made.
But the investigator privately told Claire the fire appeared deliberate.
That evening, Gregory finally called.
His voice was shaking.
“I helped Evan move money,” he said. “But I did not start that fire.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
May you like
“Somewhere he can’t find me.”
Then the line went dead.
