The divorce was finalized six months later.
Claire and Evan sat across from each other in a quiet conference room.
He looked older.
He had lost weight.
For the first time since the pool, he seemed to understand that charm would not save him.
“I did love you,” he said.
Claire believed he thought that was true.
But Evan had loved being admired more.
He had loved access, status, and the version of himself reflected in Claire’s success.
“Maybe you loved me,” she said. “But you did not respect me.”
He lowered his eyes.
Claire signed the final page.
Evan asked whether she would ever forgive him.
Claire answered carefully.
“I hope one day I stop carrying what you did.”
“That isn’t the same.”
“No.”
She stood.
“Forgiveness is not another thing you get to demand from me.”
