Lydia’s Final Bargain

Chapter 14 - Lydia’s Final Bargain
Lydia contacted Claire before the criminal hearing.
She offered bank records proving Evan had hidden money overseas.
In exchange, she wanted immunity from prosecution and one million dollars.
Claire refused.
Lydia smiled.
“You think you’re different from me because your hands look clean.”
Claire stood.
“I am different because I can lose money without becoming a thief.”
Lydia’s expression changed.
The meeting ended.
Hours later, Lydia delivered the records to Detective Grant without conditions.
She left a note for Claire.
You were right about one thing. Evan chose this. But I spent his whole life teaching him that being caught was worse than being cruel.
The records revealed nearly six million dollars.
Most could be recovered.
Lydia disappeared before the hearing.
Claire never saw her again.
