Chapter 04 - The Locked Office
Claire slept in the guest room and locked the door.
At two in the morning, she heard Evan moving through his office.
When she entered the hallway, he was carrying a box toward the garage.
“What is that?”
“Old files.”
Claire looked at the box.
One folder bore the name of their flagship hotel, The Marlowe.
Evan tried to pass her.
Claire blocked him.
The argument woke the housekeeper, Rosa, who had worked for Claire’s family for fifteen years.
Rosa quietly told Claire that Evan had been taking documents out of the office for weeks.
He had also changed the password to the company accounting system.
Evan accused Rosa of interfering.
Claire told him to leave the house.
“This is my home too,” he said.
Claire replied, “Then you should have remembered that before you turned the pool into a honeymoon suite.”
Evan left with one suitcase.
The box remained behind.
Inside, Claire found draft documents transferring ownership of three hotels into a new company called Cole Whitmore Hospitality.
